The Gospel of Isaiah Study No. 143

Of all the books of the Old Testament, the Book of the prophet Isaiah is the one most like the New Testament. Isaiah tells us how to understand the Bible, by putting line upon line, and letting the Bible interpret itself. Using this method of interpretation on the Book of Isaiah itself, we find that several major messages are presented:

Message of Isaiah

· God exists, and we should praise Him for His greatness.

· The Gospel message is a call to repentance and returning to the Lord.

· Isaiah prophesies of the coming Messiah who would be born of a virgin, magnify the law, and suffer and die for our sins.

· Israel will rebel against God, be punished, and taken into captivity for their sins.

· Israel’s sins are false prophets, false feasts and false worship, false leaders, and idolatry.

· God will judge the world in the Day of the Lord.

· In the midst of judgment, God will extend mercy. There will be a Place of Safety, and a Second Exodus of God’s people out of captivity.

· The Good News of the World Tomorrow is that there will be a resurrection of the dead, and a New Covenant with Israel, as the Lord returns and establishes the Millennium on this earth. There will be universal re-education, agriculture will be restored, and the Gentiles will be saved.

· The new heavens and new earth shall remain forever. From one New Moon and Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before the Eternal.

Background of Isaiah

Isaiah means "the Eternal is Salvation," and is a name synonymous with Joshua (Jesus) and Hosea. Isaiah dates his prophecy between 760 and 695 B.C., as he prophesied from the time of Uzziah to Hezekiah (Isaiah 1:1). From the year Uzziah died (Isaiah 6:1) to the fourteenth year of Hezekiah (Isaiah 36:1) is a span of 46 years. Hebrew tradition says Isaiah was sawn in two by King Manasseh (see Hebrews 11:37). If this is so, then Isaiah prophesied for at least 60 years. Tradition also says that Isaiah was the cousin of King Uzziah.

Isaiah was married and had at least two sons (Isaiah 8:18, 7:3). He ministered when Assyria was the great Middle Eastern power, and when Assyria invaded Palestine and took the northern Israel captive (721 B.C.). God raised up Isaiah to warn Judah that she too would go into captivity for her many sins, unless she repented.

Isaiah’s message is for us, today! The church, spiritual Israel, is laden with iniquity and has grievously departed from God’s ways. There is still time to repent and return to the Eternal, but the time is very short. The Almighty’s mercy is available, but if we do not seek His mercy quickly, His swift judgments are sure.

Isaiah’s prophetic message sounds much like the Gospel of the New Testament. There is much of the basic Gospel message of repentance and condemnation of Israel’s sins, which was the core message of the Messiah. Lambasting the false prophets and hypocritical leaders was a common theme of Isaiah and Jesus Christ.

Because of their sins, modern Israel will go into captivity, and after being punished, will be regathered in a "Second Exodus," which will be greater than the first exodus. The Second Exodus is a theme echoed by other Old Testament prophets, and is a vital message that needs to be proclaimed today. After the dreadful and fearsome Day of the Lord, Isaiah gives the good news of the Kingdom of God, the Millennium. God’s mercy in the midst of His judgment shows at once the justice and loving kindness of our Heavenly Father. Some of the most beautiful passages of the Holy Scriptures are contained in the book of Isaiah. The Almighty is going to stop sin and bring about a New Heavens and a New Earth. This is really good news! That is why Isaiah has a gospel message.

Paul N. Benware, in Survey of the Old Testament (Moody Press, 1988), pages 194-197, says that the key word of Isaiah is "Servant of the Lord." See Isaiah 41:8-10; 42:1-7; 42:19-35; 43:10; 44:1-2, 21; 48:20-22; 49:1-13; 50:4-11; 52:13—53:12. Isaiah uses the term "servant" three ways: in reference to all Israel (41:8), in reference to a remnant within Israel (43:10), and in reference to the coming Messiah (52:13—53:12). The greatest servant is the Messiah, and His work of redeeming mankind from sin, Mark 10:45. The Almighty is not only a God of justice and judgment. He is a God of mercy, love and kindness. He not only condemns and punishes sin, He provides a way whereby sin can be defeated. Isaiah may not have understood fully everything he was inspired to write. Of all the prophets, Isaiah most clearly wrote beforehand about the sufferings of the Messiah, and the glory that would follow in His Kingdom, I Peter 1:10-11.

Considering all this, it is proper to refer to Isaiah’s book as "The Gospel of Isaiah." Truly, the plan of Salvation is clearly presented by Isaiah the son of Amoz.

The method of using "line upon line" of scripture to explain and understand other scriptures is utilized in this study. I have paraphrased portions of Isaiah, and organized them according to topic. You are encouraged to follow along in your own Bible.

HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE

28:9-13 Bible is written line upon line, precept on precept, here a little, there a little, with stammering lips, so that they might fall backward, and be snared.

29:9-14 They have the spirit of deep sleep, so that the Bible is a sealed book that they cannot read or understand.

66:2 I will look to those of a poor and contrite spirit, who tremble at My word.

GOD EXISTS!

Praise the LORD! God is great!

26:1-8 Praise the Lord, who brings down the mighty cities.

40:12-31 Who has instructed the Lord? The nations are as a drop of a bucket, nothing before Him. To whom will ye liken God? Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things. The Creator faints not, and gives power to the faint. They that wait upon the Lord shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary.

41:22-23 God has the power to show us what shall happen hereafter.

42:10-12 Give glory to the Lord, declare His praise.

43:10-15 You are My witnesses, that I am God. I am the Lord, the Holy One, Creator and King.

44:6-8 I am First and Last; there is no god besides Me.

44:23-28 I am the Lord that makes all things.

45:5-25 I am the Lord, there is none else, no God beside me. I make peace and create evil . . . God Himself formed the earth, created it not in vain, but formed it to be inhabited . . . every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear . . . In the Lord shall all Israel be justified.

46:5 To whom will ye liken Me?

46:9-11 I am God, and there is none else, declaring the end from the beginning, I have spoken and will bring it to pass.

50:2-4 At My rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness.

66:1-2 Heaven is My throne, earth is My footstool, where is the house that you will build to Me? I have made all things.

MESSAGE OF THE GOSPEL

Gospel

40:1-11 Comfort ye My people, cry unto Jerusalem, the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord. The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. Say unto the cities of Judah, behold your God, the Lord will come, and feed His flock like a shepherd.

Repent

1:16-19 Repent, relieve the oppressed, and your scarlet sins shall be forgiven, and made white like wool.

31:6 Turn ye to Him from whom Israel has greatly revolted.

40:6-8 All flesh is grass, and fades, but the Word of our God shall stand forever.

43:25-26 I am He that blots out your transgressions for Mine own sake. Declare your sins that you may be justified.

44:21-22 Israel: don’t forget you are God’s servant, I have blotted out your transgressions, return unto Me for I have redeemed thee.

51:1-2 Listen to Me, look to God and Abraham our father.

55:6-9 Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him when He is near, let the wicked forsake his way, and return to the Lord, and He will have mercy and abundantly pardon.

57:15-19 I dwell with those of a contrite and humble spirit, giving them peace.

58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, show My people their sins.

59:1-2 God is able to save, but your sins have separated you from Him so He won’t hear your prayers.

66:2 I will look to those of a poor and contrite spirit, who tremble at My word.

Fasting

58:3-12 Fasting in wickedness is to no avail. If you fast to loose the bands of iniquity, to deal bread to the hungry, then the Lord shall satisfy your soul in drought, you will be a restorer of paths to dwell in.

Sabbath

56:1-7 Blessed is the man who keeps the Sabbath. I will give the eunuchs who keep My sabbaths an everlasting name. Strangers who keep the Sabbath will be joyful in God’s house of prayer.

58:13-14 If you stop doing your pleasure on the Sabbath, you shall delight in the Lord, He will cause you to ride upon the high places of the earth.

Messianic Prophecy

7:14 A virgin shall conceive, her son shall be called Immanuel.

9:1-2 People that walked in darkness (in Zebulun and Naphtali) have seen a great light.

9:6-7 A child is born, a son is given, the government shall be upon His shoulder. He shall be called the mighty God, Prince of Peace; the increase of His government shall have no end.

42:21 The Lord will magnify the law.

50:6 I gave My back to the smiters.

52:13-15 He shall be exalted, many were astonished at His marred visage, He shall instruct kings.

53:1-12 Despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, surely He has borne our griefs, He was wounded for our transgressions, He poured out His soul unto death, bearing the sins of many.

REBELLION, PUNISHMENT OF ISRAEL

Rebellion of Israel

1:2-4 God’s children have rebelled against Him; they are a sinful nation laden with iniquity.

1:5-6 The whole head is sick, the heart is faint, the whole body is full of wounds, bruises, and sores.

1:9-10 This nation is like Sodom and Gomorrah, and only a small remnant will remain.

3:8-9 Jerusalem and Judah are ruined, because their tongue and doings are against the Lord. They unashamedly boast of their sins, like Sodom.

3:16-26 Daughters of Zion are haughty, having wanton eyes. God shall punish them, their men shall fall by the sword, and they shall be desolate.

5:1-7 Parable of the vineyard and its wild grapes shows that Israel has produced oppression and unrighteousness, and will be destroyed like a corrupt vineyard.

5:14-19 Those who dare God to punish them shall be judged.

5:20-24 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil. They have cast away the law of the Lord.

6:9-10 Prophet’s warning unheeded.

22:9-14 There are many breaches in the city of David, yet they have the sinful attitude of "eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die."

30:1 Woe to rebellious children who don’t take counsel of Him.

30:9-11 Rebellious, lying people who will not hear law of Lord, who say to the prophets, "Prophecy not right things, speak smooth things, deceits, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us."

48:1-19 Israel claims to be following God, but is a transgressor, stubbornly refusing to harken to His commandments, which lead to peace.

50:1 For your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and your mother is divorced.

58:2 They falsely act as if they are seeking me.

59:1-15 Your sins have separated you from God, your hands are full of blood, your feet run to evil, the way of peace you know not.

65:1-16 I have spread out my hands all day to a rebellious people that provoke me to anger continually. They say "I am holier than thou," yet they eat pork and burn incense upon the mountains. When I called, ye did not answer, when I spoke, ye didn’t hear, but did evil.

Punishment of Israel

1:25-28 I will purge away the dross, they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed. I will restore you as the faithful city of righteousness.

3:1-12 The Lord shall take away bread and water, and women and babes shall rule over them.

4:1-6 In that day, those left shall be holy, when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, there shall be a tabernacle for rest and refuge.

5:25-30 The Lord is angry with His people and will smite them.

6:11-12 Cities shall be wasted, without inhabitant, land desolate.

9:8-14 The pride of Israel is trying to rebuild from God’s punishment, not turning to Him that smites them. Therefore, the Lord will cut off Israel, head and tail, in one day.

28:1-6 Ephraim is a nation of drunkards. Their pride and glorious beauty is a fading flower; they shall be cast down, and only a residue remain.

30:12-17 Because you despise His word, your breaking shall come suddenly at an instant, like a potter’s vessel. One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one.

51:17-20 Desolation, famine and sword has come upon you, as result of the fury of the Lord.

64:1-12 We have sinned, You have consumed us for our iniquities.

65:12-15 You shall be slaughtered, leaving your name a curse.

Captivity

5:10, 13 Famine and captivity result from no knowledge of God.

10:3-27 Assyrian shall make a prey of an hypocritical nation, Israel, even though he means not so. When God is through with using Assyria to punish Israel, He will punish Assyria for her proud boasting, and few will be left.

42:24 The Lord gave Israel to the robbers, because they have sinned against His laws.

47:6 I was wroth with My people, and gave them into the hand of Babylon.

63:9-10 In all their afflictions, He was afflicted, but they rebelled, so He turned to being their enemy.

SINS OF ISRAEL

False Prophets

8:19-20 Seek God, not familiar spirits, wizards which peep and mutter. If they speak not according to this word, the law, there is no light in them.

9:15-17 Lying prophet is the tail, causing God’s people to err. Everyone is an hypocrite and an evildoer.

10:1-2 Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, to turn aside the needy from judgment, rob and hurt the poor, widows and fatherless.

28:7-8 Priest and prophet have erred through wine and strong drink. They shall stumble in judgment, their tables are full of vomit and filthiness.

29:9-16 Prophets and rulers are drunken, but not with wine. The Lord has poured out upon them the spirit of deep sleep, so that the Bible is a sealed book, which they cannot read or understand. Their lips honor Me, but their heart is far from Me. They seek to hide their counsel from the Lord, turning things upside down.

29:21 They make a man an offender for a word, and turn aside the just.

56:9-12 Blind watchmen, greedy dogs, these shepherds are out for selfish gain and drunkenness.

False Feasts, False Worship

1:11-13 The Lord does not want the sacrifices of this sinful people.

1:13-14 Your New Moons, Sabbaths and Feasts My soul hates.

1:15 I will not listen to your prayers, for your hands are full of blood.

5:11-12 Their drunken feasts have music, but no consideration of the Lord.

False Leaders

1:21-23 The faithful city has become an harlot, there is bribery and oppression of the fatherless and the widow.

3:1-7 The Lord shall take away leaders, prophets, soldiers. Children and babes shall rule over them. Nobody will want to be the ruler.

3:12-15 Israel’s leaders are like oppressive children, women rulers, causing God’s people to err. They beat God’s people to pieces, grinding up the poor.

10:1-2 Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, to turn aside the needy from judgment, rob and hurt the poor, widows and fatherless.

24:21-22 Kings of earth shall be shut up in prison.

28:14-22 Scornful men, mockers who rule in Jerusalem who have made lies their refuge. They shall be swept away and trodden down by a scourge, a consumption.

43:27-28 Thy teachers have transgressed against Me, bringing a curse to Israel.

66:5 Your brethren that hated you, cast you out for my name’s sake.

Idolatry

2:5-9 God has forsaken Jacob because they follow eastern religions. They are full of idols of silver and gold; they worship the works of their hands.

17:7-8 Then shall a man look to his Maker, not to the work of his hands.

30:22 You shall defile your images, cast them off as a menstruous cloth.

31:7 In that day, every man shall cast away his idols of silver and gold, which your own hands have made for you a sin.

42:17 They shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images.

44:9-20 Idol making is vanity; their eyes are shut, they cannot understand, for they are deceived.

45:20 They have no knowledge that set up graven images, and pray to a god that cannot save.

46:6-7 They fashion their gods out of gold and silver, which cannot answer nor save from trouble.

GOD JUDGES THE WORLD

Day of the LORD

2:10-22 Day of Lord shall bring loftiness of man low. They shall crawl into caves when He arises to shake terribly the earth, and cast their idols of silver and gold to the moles and bats.

13:6, 9 Day of the Lord is destruction from the Almighty upon sinners.

13:11 Lord will punish the world for its iniquity, cause arrogancy of the proud to cease.

26:21 Lord shall punish inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.

28:21 The Lord will do His strange work, His strange act.

30:26-33 Lord comes with anger and indignation. His tongue as a devouring fire.

31:1-5 Woe to them that go to Egypt for help, and trust in horsemen and chariots, looking not to the Holy One of Israel. He will arise against evildoers, the Lord of Hosts shall come down to fight for Zion, and defend and deliver Jerusalem.

34:1-17 God’s sword shall come down on Idumea (Edom) in a great slaughter, the day of the Lord’s vengeance, year of recompenses for the controversy of Zion. The land shall become burning pitch. From generation to generation it shall lie waste, a habitation of owls and dragons, wild beasts of the desert. Not one of the words of the Lord’s book shall fail.

42:13 Lord shall go forth as a mighty man, a man of war.

57:17-21 I smote him for his covetousness . . . there is no peace to the wicked.

59:16-19 There is no intercessor for God’s Truth, so He puts on His armor, and renders fury to His adversaries.

61:2 Day of vengeance of our God.

63:1-6 Lord treads winepress alone in His fury, in the day of His vengeance.

64:1 Oh, that You would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might flow down at Thy presence.

66:15-17 Lord will come with fire and fury, for by fire and sword will the Lord plead with all flesh. The slain of the Lord shall be many. Those who sanctify themselves and eat pork and the mouse shall be consumed.

66:24 They shall look on the corpses of those who have transgressed against Me.

Population Decrease

24:1-6 Lord is going to make the earth waste and spoiled, defiled, because they have transgressed His laws, broken the covenant, therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

24:13 People left are as the shaking of an olive tree, the gleaning of grapes.

28:5 Only a residue of His people shall be left.

33:1-14 The highways lay waste, the earth mourns and languishes, because they have broken the covenant, the people shall be as thorns cut up burned in the fire.

Pestilence

28:15-22 An overflowing scourge, a consumption, will sweep away liars and mockers against God.

Heavenly Signs

13:10 Stars shall not give light, sun darkened, no moonlight.

13:13 Lord will shake heavens and earth in His fierce wrath.

24:23 Moon shall be confounded, sun ashamed.

30:26 Light of the moon shall be as the sun, the sun sevenfold.

34:4 Heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll, all their host shall fall down as leaves.

Earthquake

13:13 Earth shall be shaken.

24:18-20 Foundations of the earth do shake, earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard.

Assyria

10:3-27 Assyrian shall make a prey of an hypocritical nation, Israel, even though he means not so. When God is through with using Assyria to punish Israel, He will punish Assyria for her proud boasting, and few will be left.

14:25 Assyria shall be broken in My land, and his burden depart from Israel’s shoulders.

30:31 Through the voice of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten down.

31:8-9 Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man.

36 & 37 Hezekiah’s prayer, defeat of Sennacherib King of Assyria

Babylon

13:17-21 Lord will stir up the Medes against Babylon, who will overthrow Babylon as Sodom and Gomorrah. It shall never be inhabited, but wild beasts of the desert shall lie there.

14:4-7 The King of Babylon, the oppressor, has ceased, and the whole earth is at rest and quiet.

21:2, 9 Elam and Media will besiege and spoil. Babylon is fallen!

24:10 The city of confusion (Babylon) is broken down, desolated.

39:1-8 Hezekiah shows all his treasures to King of Babylon, Isaiah prophesies future Babylonian captivity.

44:28, Lord called Cyrus by name

45:1-4 before his birth, in order to overturn Babylon.

47:1-15 Virgin daughter of Babylon shall be made naked, no more be called "the lady of kingdoms." You said you shall be a lady forever, but in one day you shall suffer loss of children and widowhood. You trusted in your wickedness, said there was none else beside you, but your astrologers shall be as stubble, and your merchants shall wander, none shall save you. Let now the astrologers save you, Babylon, from the things that shall come upon you.

Egypt

19:1-4 Egyptians shall fight against themselves, and a cruel Lord rule over them, the river shall dry up.

19:18-25 There will be an altar of the Lord in Egypt, Lord shall be known in Egypt, Egyptians shall sacrifice to the Lord. There shall be an highway from Egypt to Assyria (also 11:16). 26:20 Come my people, enter into your chambers, till the indignation be past.

33:15-22 He that walks righteously, despises gain of oppressions, shakes his hands from bribes, shuts his eyes from seeing evil, shall dwell on high, bread shall be given him, his waters shall be sure. The Lord is our judge, lawgiver, king; He will save us.

43:19-21 I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, for My people to drink, and they shall show forth My praise.
